All you need to know about Minecraft! SRSLY. (003)

So, you've learned how to move, you know what monsters are, and hey! You've even built a house, and survived the night! So now what? All is reveled within...

So, in Minecraft you may be a bit at a stall. You may think, "What can I possibly do now?" Well you have a couple choices, so let me lay them out for you, and then we will go into a more in depth look at each one.

  • SMP (Survival Multiplayer)
  • Building
  • Exploring
  • Mining (Bit of a mix of building and Exploring)
  • Playing around with Mods
We will start with SMP first. SMP is a bit different for a couple reasons. In regular Minecraft, the universally accepted look at the game is that somehow, somewhere, our main guy Steve (Name of the character you play with) was stranded on an island, (Technically, a collection of islands) and is all alone. Now, whether that is true or not, what is fact is that Steve is all ALONE. 100% singularity, unobstructed, pure and unadulterated alone-ness. He is completely by himself, and one of the things that most people end up doing in the game is trying to recreate civilization. SMP removes that. In SMP, you usually start at the spawn point, which is decorated with wonderful and beautiful things, that you can not destroy due to some mods. You walk around and chances are you will meet people. LOTS of people. Make friends with them, build with them, and all over, have a blast, because your Steve is no longer alone! Of course, there are some Major and minor differences to SMP and SSP.

  1. Lag. You will most likely be assaulted by lag, whether from their side or yours, and it is hard to avoid. One of the things you can do to fix that is by getting a better wireless card, make sure the server has a good connection and/or is dedicated and go LAN.
  2. Griefers. Douchebags. Idiots. Poopy-heads. Call them whatever you want, but you know what they are, and they are out to get you. They don't like you, and chances are that they came onto the server just to mess with you. There is not much you can do PERSONALLY to make sure that griefers don't bother you, but there are a few things that the server should have before you join it, if you want to make sure you don't have to deal with these people. For one, mods help. Any mod that is Anti-griefer, or has a back-up function, or watches every block placed and logs it will help you. Also, whitelists are fantastic griefer detterents. This means that someone has to apply for the server before they can get in. And last but not least, the better the mods and admins, the safer you should be. But remember, no server is griefer proof, so don't get to mad if they wreck your stuff, or steal from your chests!
  3. Kits, and mods such as the /give command. These make everything you do much, much easier. Kits give you a limited amount of items to start building with, whereas the /give command automatically gives you whatever items you want. This can be very helpful if you are a big builder kind of guy. (Or gal!)
  4. Monsters and mobs. Some have both, some have none. Most have creepers nerfed, preventing any stray creepers blowing up their fantastic creations, but will still have zombies and spiders and skeletons there ready to strike you down. The thing is, with lag, it is hard to kill even a lowly zombie without getting harmed, so I suggest armor and swords, instead going hardcore badass on them . It won't work.
  5. Building is a LOT easier with 5 people going at it. :P
Building seems a bit self explanatory, but I'll explain anyways. If you are one of those kids who will build a 1:1 Lego replica of yourself simply because you were bored one day, this is what you are going to want to do. Building in Minecraft is creation of cities, house's and entire worlds, with a few clicks of your mouse. You want the Golden Gate To stretch across you Olympic sized, back yard swimming pool, and then up and around the Statue of Liberty to lead to your floating city in the sky? Then, Minecraft would be the place to do it. Minecraft lets you release your imagination, let's it solidify in this video game and lets you represent everything you'd want in life.

Exploration is a bit obvious too, but I'll give it a go. Minecraft has a natural beauty, even in all of it's blocky form. You have rolling hills, with massive overhangs and cliffs, placed right next to the massive and vast oceans, and it all belongs to you. There is more to see, too. In fact, there is not much you wouldn't be able to see, because with beds changing your spawn in a recent update, mixed with the fact that the world generation is 8 TIMES LARGER THAN EARTH, I don't think you will see much of anything twice.

Mining is a bit more complicated than it sounds. Of course, if you really are one of those people who enjoy sitting on their computer's for hours on end mining block after block after block after block after block...
Well then, go at it, no one's stopping you. But for the rest of you, mining is basically this; living underground. In that way it is a mix of both building and exploration, but is mainly focused around the fact that it won't be much fun unless you are one of those guys (Or gals) who enjoy mining blocks. See, when you are underground, you can't just walk around you house, or place another house 20 feet away, because you need to mine the blocks out of the way. The exploration part comes in when you are finding one of the many hidden ores of Minecraft, or if you have found a cave, or even a monster spawner! In that fact, you should be entertained for hours avoiding the deadly and mythical slimes, or even enjoying the Nether!

Last but not least, is mods. Minecraft has a very creative user database, and with the source code becoming practically free to everyone, mods are becoming increasingly easier to build, and increasingly fun to play with. granted, mods are dangerous and can even break your saves, but that is a risk you are willing to take for your butterfly's, or portal guns, isn't it?

So, all in all, there is plenty to do in Minecraft, and this is the last Minecraft post you will see (Unless you guys want more!) Minecraft is a fantastic game, and there is plenty to do for everyone, but one of the funnest things to do is find out, by yourself, all that this wonderful game has to offer you.
